Border Skin is a free portable software to skin the windows borders by skins composed of png images with the support of several features like Blur, Reflection and Aero Explorer, it supports Windows XP/Vista/7/8. ![]() ![]() The Aero Glass was just so much nicer and easier to see. What I didn't like was how ugly the taskbar was. I disable it because I actually like the revamped start menu in Win 10. The StartIsBack program lets you choose if you want that classic Windows style start menu, or Win 8.1, or Win 10 or any combination. Personally, I actually prefer the Win10 start menu to the older ones on 7 and XP. Oh I've had classicshell in the past, didn't like it. The number of options they have for customization is pretty impressive. Honestly I think it looks better than startisback.Įdit: Well, and I had been using ClassicShell since 2014, when I got a new computer with Windows 7 on it.Įdit again: There are videos on the internet, but I would highly suggest if you're not liking the start menus, look at OpenShell. It was one of the first programs I installed, and it brought back the more familiar Windows 7 start menu. I'm not sure where they get off on charging for a product like this. Then the same color is shown on the start menu when switched back to desktop mode. It's always worked fine for me, and it's free. One needs to change Windows colors when in Start Screen mode. Anyways, all you have to do now is download the skin again, and replace it.I've been using ClassicShell, and now OpenShell since I installed Windows 10 back in 2019 or so. I also for some reason set the glow to red myself, probably for experimentation, then I forgot to set it back. Now Go to Desktop Personalize & apply 'Vista Aero' or 'Vista Basic' theme. This is something a user pointed out in the comments and I greatly appreciate it. ![]() UPDATE 2: I've modified the skin to remove the red glow around the text. So when you extract the skin extract it to "C:\Program Files\Open-Shell\Skins" UPDATE!: For all those who have updated from Classic Shell to Open-Shell, make sure that you place the skin in the Open-Shell folder instead of the Classic Shell folder. You should now have the good old Windows XP fonts! To use the skin, extract the skin to "C:\Program Files\Classic Shell\Skins", using 7zip ( You can download it from here: To apply the skin, open the classic shell start menu settings, go to the skin tab and from the menu, choose "Windows XP Luna New" and click OK. Click on ‘File’ menu and select ‘Run new task’. Open task manager by either holding CTRL+SHIFT and hit ESC or holding ALT+CTRL and hit DELETE then choose task manager. Boot Windows normally until you see black screen. If you want to do so, you will have to do it manually, because the skin does not contain the icons and it neither contains the start menu structure. And if you’re only getting black screen, please follow this steps: 1. It doesn't look exactly like it is in Windows XP, but at least unlike the default Windows XP Luna skin, it has the correct font. That is why I am publishing this skin file for classic shell. For some reason the font in the classic shell start menu uses the default font "Segoe UI", even if you changed the system font. If you have tried to make the Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or 10 start menu like from Windows XP, by using classic shell, you might have noticed that the font in the menu is incorrect. Comes with 2 new start buttons This is based on the whistler 2257-2410 theme (s), hence the reason for the two different start buttons. ![]()
